Savage Flies

Добавлен 21 фев 2020
New tying videos posted every Wednesday and Sunday at 7:00 AM (EST). My mission: tutorials, tips & tricks, and giving back to the tying community.
I have THREE goals to help achieve the mission:
1) Fly Tying Tutorials. I've been publishing at least two new tying videos every week. Hopefully a new tier can learn a little something from each one.
2) Tips, tricks, product reviews, and fly histories. I think linking the next generation of tiers with our forefathers in the community is a great way to continue the heritage that makes fly fishing and tying such a great sport.
3) Giveaways. Sometimes there is no better way to give back to the community than simply giving back. From vises, tools and tool kits, tying books, gift cards, etc, I want to help as many people as possible enjoy tying.
Cheers,
Matt O'Neal

The 130 year old Bumblepuppy (4th of July variation)
Просмотров 1,9 тыс.21 день назад
I'll bet when Theodore Gordon wrote about this pattern in the 1890s, he never dreamed we would still be tying it 130 years later. And tying it in videos! What is a video he would be thinking? And why did you make it with a blue wing? Well Theodore, it's to commemorate our Independence Day! Anyway, I digress. The Bumblepuppy is an old pattern. And a cool looking streamer. Fly Tying for Beginners - a Marabou Hairwing Streamer
Nice Fly Kevin, thanks for the demo Matt . I would think it would great on pan fish and probably some large and smallmouth bass.
Dr fish or the max catch?
It drives me crazy! Is this a sport, a hobby, a pastime or what? Definitely an obsession.
I've had good luck with this color combination, can't wait to try this pattern
Thank you, Kevin for sharing your pattern! Up here on Puget Sound the Chinook are biting on chartreuse right now, so this will likely work in saltwater, too, albeit a little bigger. Maybe a size 6? Thank you for tying it, Matt!
I grew up in Olympia and Oregon coast so sea run cuts are always on my mind ...so I was definitely thinking of Puget Sound while creating it! The Hungarian partridge/ India hen gives lots of life that fish like in the salt!
Neat idea and fly Kevin. Thx Matt
Yep. That should work. Since the remaining part of the soft hackle feather happened to land on top, I wonder if it would work well if you simply left it there without clipping it off. You would have a flatwing variant. ;-)
Neat looking fly
Definitely looks like a good one, Matt Trout, pan fish, or bass Thanks for the video, Matt
Another awesome fly for me to tie! Thanks for sharing, Matt! Tight lines my friend! 😎🎣
Neat fly Matt and Kevin. Pretty bright so you know the pan fish will love it, but for the fish I'm after (bait) I'll have to tie it smaller. Keep the good stuff coming
Nice looking fly, I will tie a few and hit it a try. Thanks Kevin and Matt.
Very cool fly Kevin! Definetly panfish candy!
I agree it will be killer on the local panfish. Time to order the necessary goodies. Thanks Matt & thanks for sharing it Kevin.
Nice fly Kevin. Thanks for tying this one Matt. I fully agree with you on this fly being great for panfish. Love the colors. Quoting Brian Flechsig from Mad River Outfitter’s, “It’s of no use, if it’s not Chartreuse”.
@@jeffreystone7327 Actually, that saying was coined by Lefty Kreh. Brian uses it and most times says it's Lefty's quote.
Thanks Kevin n Matt!! Now who wants to know how to tie a crawfish pattern with fake fingernails? Should I send Matt the recipe? Anyway Thanks for sharing Matt n Kevin!! Tight Lines ya all!!!
Nice fly matt tks Kevin 😊
I like it. Thanks Kevin.
That fly is worth a hat!
Nice fly, Kevin. Matt, thanks for tying this pattern for us this morning. It would definitely be a great panfish fly here in Florida.
I'd love a pic with this fly in the mouth of some of those exotic panfish you have down in Florida!
Great name and nice fly, thanks Kevin and Matt for sharing. 🐛m-m-m!
Tied small enough, bushy soft hackles work great on panfish. My best luck comes with the darker shades.
You can put the tinsel tighter and it has real cool dark bright contrast.....that contrast is why it works so well in low light and murky water
Good morning ☕️☕️ Very nice bug😉👍
Nice fly Kevin. Local college has a pond with some nice bass and loaded with sunfish, going to make a few and let my granddaughter try them out. Have a great day!
Is granddaughter just learning to flyfish?
@@kevinardellafry yes she's been fishing since she was young, but only just starting to give fly fishing a try
Good morning Matt. ☕️time. Dogs got me up earlier than normal today. That fly in those colours with some weight would likely work on Walleye up here. Headed north in a couple days to go fishing. Have a great rest of your week. Take care Matt.
I agree, used to have a cottage in No. Ont. I'd tie it on a#8 or 10 Aberdeen hook for those toothy critters. And put a nice long mottled olive hen hackle or partidge
When you say 40 years ago I still think that’s the 40s or 50s (80s kid). 1984 was 40 years ago!!!!
Which is CRAZY!!
Same here! And when we hear "turn of the century" guys like us think the 1900s. Today's kids hear that and are talking about the year 2000. :-)
@@SavageFlies yep we were at a comedy show and he said we were from the late 1900s made me laugh and be sad at the same time
I am going crazy, stuck in bed with a sprained left foot and a swelled up right knee with gout. I wanna tie this pattern and fish it. UGH 😑 thanks again Matt.
I find using hen tips down to a size 22 looks nice an do like ep fiber on sizes 20 - 26 also spade hackle makes nice straight tails nice job matt tiny tiny bwos are a Excellent year round dry fly the always produce
Appreciate it Kirk! If you check out the EZ sulphur I tied right after this, you'll see me catching a nice brown trout on this BWO. ruclips.net/video/pvWdE6s2lg4/видео.htmlsi=mRN6vw4seUQjy64M
I did great video !!! Love the gunpowder @SavageFlies
This is a great fly to use during the spring runs in lake Superior in Minnesota and Wisconsin. But sometimes I use different colors on the tail like green purple blue red orange and ect... Here's one thing I like to do I add very fine wire on the body it helps to keep the peacock herls together so it won't be unwrapped and keep it tight from sharp teeth from biting
Excellent tip my friend! You may be the first person I've ever heard of who knew of this pattern. :-)
I really like the double hackle on this one and the tail could certainly be any other color. My hat is in my regular rotation of sun protection (those of us without hair know what I'm talking about!) and the sticker is on the back of my laptop! Thanks for all you do Matt!
Haha! That's awesome to hear Tom. Let me know if you ever want any more stickers. I think I had to order a minimum of 250 when I had them printed, and I've probably given out less than 50. :-)
Love these crazy lost flies you tie!
Appreciate it Dean!
Another cool fly . I love how you find these crazy old patterns. Thanks for sharing Matt
You bet David! Good luck my friend. :-)
I’m just getting back into fly fishing after a near 30 year hiatus. This is the very crawfish fly pattern I used to tie. So glad I found this. I still have several in my summer bass fly box. I used to NAIL bass with this pattern. Hoping I do it all again when I head back out in the water. As a side note, a lot has changed in 30 years. I learned this pattern from a senior fly fisherman friend back when I was 19 years old or so and it was one I kept going back to. Easy and it works. Now, there’s this thing called the internet and on it you have RUclips where you can find EVERYTHING you’d ever need. LOL Thanks again for the refresher.
Haha! Great comment my friend and welcome back to the sport! I've only tried two crawfish patterns; this one and one with zonker strips for the claws. But I still like the looks of this squirrel one. :-)
I'm going to try this fly. I'd be CRAZY not to. 😊
Hahaha! Good luck my friend. :-)
Man I woke up this morning with some crazy ideas for a fly 🪰 to tie for bass in the pond lake I live on.
Haha! Go for it Alex. :-)
Crazy Crazy Crazy Did I mention how it's Crazy how many subscribers you have? Nice job on the channel Matt
Well thank you William! It's been four years since I started the channel but I'm still having fun. :-)
Should.of used hen hackle for wings there too thin trout really key in on these an can be extremely picky about profile
Good tip Kirk, but if I recall, all my hen hackle was far too wide for wings like these.
I'd love to see some flies tied with some Crazy materials. Have you ever tied a fly with a snake skin shed?
No! That's certainly interesting though. I wonder how durable it would be. Have you ever used it?
@SavageFlies No I haven't. But I just started tying in Feb. I've never seen this material used but could envision it used for wings or fly body. I haven't run across any this season. I kayak on the Ohio and sometime run across some when fishing. I would think it would perform well under resin. Something to consider.
Crazy
That's a crazy cool fly, Matt. Thanks for sharing.
Appreciate it Mark!
Nice job Matt
very close to a Holy Grail Caddis Emerger....
I think you're right, but if I recall the Holy Grail may have a pheasant or turkey wing case. But still, one of the few flies with the hackle in front of a bead.
Cool fly Matt! I know it's CRAZY, but peacock catches fish.
Yes indeed Jim!
This looks like a crazy fun fly
Yes indeed Greg!
That is a crazy fly
It is indeed Steven!
Am I still crazy after all these years? Yup
Nice Paul Simon reference. :-)
Am I crazy to think I’ll get picked? I just need a new hat. Heading to Italy and I promise to wear it at the Stonfo store.
I've got plenty of hats my friend. Send me an email and I'll send one your way. :-) matt@savageflies.com
That is pretty CRAZY how just a few materials tied on a hook can catch fish. Neat looking fly. Safe travels Matt
Appreciate it Jeff!
@@SavageFlies it is my pleasure Matt. 🙏🏻🙏🏻
Crazy, yep I resemble that remark. Great fly Matt. Thank you.
Hahaha! I think we're all a little crazy my friend. After all, we do tie dead animal materials onto hooks to try and catch fish. :-)
